2008 will be a heart healthy year!

The Cardiovascular Health program staff are looking forward to a great year. Our program plan includes a lot of new and exciting projects and partners. Below is a summary of our plan for 2008.

Warrensville Heights has funding available for 2008 for a community garden! The site is still to be determined. If you have a suggestion for a location, please contact Ann Stahlheber at 216-201-201 x1544.

East Cleveland has funding available for at least 4 new community gardens this year! The Health and Development committee is working to identify sites that are spread across the 3.4 square mile city. If you would like to suggest a site or join one of the gardens, please contact Ann Stahlheber at 216-201-2001 x1544. The E.C. Grows community garden located at the Coit Road Farmer’s Market received additional funds to expand. If you are interested in gardening there, please contact Gladys Walcott at 216-681-8535.

The North Randall community garden and park have funding available for expansion of the community garden and development of a walking path. If you would like a plot at the garden, please contact Dorris Wheat at 216-581-8446. H.A.M. landscaping, located in North Randall will provide the expertise, with the community providing a lot of the labor. If you would like to help out with this project, please contact Ann Stahlheber at 216-201-2001 x1544.

The Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland (DAGC) is offering community gardening to their Dining with Diabetes and Monitoring your Blood Glucose program attendees. The garden piece of the program will provide ongoing nutrition and diabetes education, stress relief, exercise, and emotional support. DAGC will have a plot at the Randall Park Garden in North Randall.

The East Cleveland Health and Development team will continue to work on community revitalization through greenspace development, public safety, brownfields/environment, transportation, zoning, economic/commercial development and residential development.

The YMCA of Greater Cleveland will continue to be a partner with the CVH program of Cuyahoga County. One of their programs, Clevelanders in Motion, has been hired to create attractive walking maps of the area communities (East Cleveland, North Randall, and Warrensville Heights). These postcard sized maps will provide a safe walking route along with points of interest along the way. The community is encouraged to assist with identifying key assets to highlight (or dangers to avoid). If you would like to assist with walkability audits in one of these communities, please contact Barb Clint at 216-385-5114.

The Southeast YMCA is planning for a Leaders Club for Warrensville Heights School District students this year. The CVH program staff are going to assist with the integration of a nutrition curriculum for the youth enrolled in this after-school activity. The nutrition curriculum will also be integrated into one or more of the summer programs offered by the Southeast and Downtown YMCA’s.

The CCBH “DIET” (Dietitians Involved in Education and Training) program will continue through the 2008 year. CVH program staff plan on continuing their training of health care providers in the target communities to reduce childhood obesity. If you are a health care provider in East Cleveland, North Randall or Warrensville Heights and would like more information or a training, please contact Ann Stahlheber at 216-201-2001 x1544.

Accurate Glucose Monitoring will again be provided in 2008 by the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland. This health care provider training program better equips local nurses, technicians or aids to properly screen people for diabetes. For more information call 216-591-0800.

CVH Program staff will assist the school wellness committees at the Warrensville Heights and the East Cleveland School Districts.

The CVH Program staff will continue to work will all worksites we worked with in 2007. We will also provide a worksite wellness conference, with the Tri-City Chamber of Commerce. The Tri-City Chamber of Commerce serves North Randall, Warrensville Heights and Highland Hills, but the conference will be open to anyone interested in worksite wellness.

The final CVH Coalition meeting of 2008 was held on Dec 10th. We summarized our year and reviewed plans for 2008. Click the link below to view the presentation.

KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit organization that envisions a great place to lay within walking distance of every child in America, honored the City of ast Cleveland as a Playful City USA. This is a national recognition program honoring cities and towns across the nation who are committed to taking action for play! With this honor, the City became eligible for a $25,000 grant for a new playspace. This playground, including a community garden, and walking/biking path, will be located next to Mayfair Elementary School.

As part of the grant process, the City created a short video to demonstrate why we are a Playful City. The students and teachers of the East Cleveland City School District were instrumental in this vital process.

Voting for the East Cleveland video counts for 30% of the grant application. Anyone can vote, and people can vote as many times as they would like (one vote per email address).

Please help the children of East Cleveland by voting for their video. Pass this message along to anyone who may be able to help out.

To vote, register with your email address at the website below. You will receive a confirmation email, where you will be able to link back to the Playful City site. Then you can select the East Cleveland video and vote on it. Thanks to everyone who helps out!

CVH Program – new blog

ccbhmantra_transparent.png cvhlogo.jpg

This blog will be used to post up to date information about the CVH program activities. The CVH program is a grant funded initiative to reduce cardiovascular disease in cuyahoga county, and in targeted communities. the Cuyahoga County Board of Health receives funds from the Ohio Department of Health to coordinate this program. We work in four domains, health care, worksites, schools, and the community. We strive to make environmental, systems or policy changes within these domains to improve physical activity, nutrition, reduce tobacco use, and to screen and properly manage diabetes, cholesterol, and high blood pressure.
